But why even add the UK, if he was french or another european country they wouldn't dream of it, maybe some people still don't realise the Republic of Ireland is a sovereign country and not part of the UK...

Because we're mates. If it'd been a Frenchie or a Nitalian they wouldn't even have reported it. The 'and' was probably the work of some intern Welsher, stirring shoot just for the fun of it. It's the kind of thing mates do.
