Recommended by a colleague...i'd in turn recommend it to anyone else.
Long drive from Peterborough to nearly Newcastle so we're spending a couple of days based in Durham.
If you like museums, steam, trams, mines, olde worlde towns from the 1930s, 1910s and 1820s its well worth a visit. Its just took us 6 hours to do it all, there's so much to see. You know what its like, you go to some attractions ans maybe 2 hours later...done. Not Beamish, if you want to see it all, its a days work. Loved the garage/cycle shop paticually', and where do all the exhibits come from ? it must all be worth a fortune.
All the period dressed staff are happy to explain and discuss each area/shop and really look like they enjoy their job
Best day ive had in some time.

I want that brand new Phillips bike (i assume 1930s...single speed, in the co-op BTW...it was only 10 guineas....the saddles worth more than that now  .

I assume its a very very popular attraction 'oop north'

I went about 15 years ago, and it's been near the top of my list of things to do again ever since. Trouble is it's not a part of the world I visit, so I'm going to have to make an effort.

Glad you liked it- went there for the second time last month also after 15 years interval. It has really expanded in that time so worth a return TVC!

It's a wonderful place. Ironically it acquired the contents of my favourite museum, Darlington's small but perfectly formed council run museum, and I've yet to pay a visit to see the polar bear that used to lurk oat the top of the stairs in the Darlo museum. It is a grand day out and I'll be paying a return visit sometime soon.

Beamish is great - but if you're going to go all the way up to 'nearly Newcastle', I'd recommend actually going to Newcastle because it's the best city in Britain: great pubs, superb culture, fun nightlife.

On the list FM...the wife wants to visit (inevitably) the Metro Centre...i just hope its not full of the usual high street retailers and nothing else. Even so, never been to Newcastle...looking forward to tomorrow.

Is there another museum along similar lines to Beamish in that part of the world? I'm sure someone was telling me about it a bit back but can't be any less vague than that. I think his daughter had her wedding there this summer. If that helps.

A weekend in Newcastle is on our list of things to do, no metro centre though.

But it's not quite as good as South Shields where all the best people are born.

Are you thinking perhaps of the Ironbridge Museums in Shropshire on the River Severn which is about ten different museums rolled into one based around the village of Coalbrookdale.

Beamish is a great day out. Us locals get a years pass for the price of the entrance fee so it's really good value. I used to take the kids at least once a month for 8 years.
The Metro Centre is like any other shopping Mall.........horrendous!

Oh and Beamish is on the C2C route if anyone is passing on a bike.
