I admit, I'm completely clueless about maintenance.

If it gets really dirty I wash it and put a bit of oil on, thats as far as it goes.

Nope I'll only go as far as a mile or two from home. Trust me the whole bike looks pretty crap not just the chain.
This. My town bike is currently making more noise than any fixed gear bike should legally be permitted to, but until it next has the reasonably foreseeable prospect of being ridden further than 2 miles, sorting it out is low on the priority list

"seat too low, knee's all over the place on the cheapest dual suspension mtb there is bouncing along with no lights in way too high a gear with a rusty chain that's making a racket its the way to ride around Liverpool"

Dont forget permed hair and shell suits

Thread upsets me, have you seen the price of it these days?!

Sorry, back to topic. I feel like setting out a stall next to one of the more heavily-cycled roads in Spalding and offering chain lube and adjustment, just that nothing more, I reckon I'd make a few quid

My OCD in the lack of basic maintenance has led to me offering basic sessions at work over the 4-weeks in March.
We have over 75 riders doing one or two of the coast to coast, Purley to Paris and/or Paris to alp d'huez.
About a third are seasoned riders and fettle their bikes, but the majority can barely even change a flat.

By the way, I'm not even doing any of the rides!

I'm a bit obsessive about keeping my bike silent, because one thing that's always appealed to me about cycling is being able to travel on a nice, quiet vehicle. If you're anywhere in or near a major city, motor vehicle noise is constant and very difficult to escape. That's one reason I'd like to see more bicycles and fewer motor vehicles.

Slightly OT: my knowledge of English has expanded slightly since posting more on the CC forums . Now I can brag about fettling my bike to the point where it's in fine fettle! We don't use that term here in Australia.

Around here it seems no one bothers to pump up the tyres, the number of times i've seem people cycling on what i would call a flat has me shaking my head.

I carry a mini 60ml bottle of Finishline chain lube in my saddle bag and have often helped people out with a bit of lube. 3 or 4 people at work with cheap commuters and sagging chains have had a bit of lube from me. Also done a bit of free maintenance during lunch just to show them how easy it is......

chain lube ?? which one ?? wet or dry ?? they sell 2 different bottle's

cheer's paul
