Was gusting a bit this afternoon on my way home, made the decision to stop fighting it and just gear down and spin a bit more, ended up getting home within 5 minutes of normal so not too bad.
Certainly wouldn't walk because of wind, hills maybe but not wind

I think strong wind is the worst of all weather conditions, all that effort to go very slowly, I sometimes check I haven't got a puncture slowing me down.

I remember going round Maryport Promenade straight into a headwind on the Hadrians Cycleway. A flat road with no shelter I was making a massive 6mph working like mad!

The whole day took 7hrs (moving) for 50 miles. Fair play to the other guys who were also completing their first 50 mile rides as well.

Head winds are a real pain, all I can suggest is get down the gears, crouched on your drops (if available) and just call it names as you go

I had an awful headwind coming home on Wednesday at 3pm. I felt like getting off but pushed on. First time I've even been down a particular road so slow.

3 mph on the lowest gear you've got is better than walking.

You can get in the 'tuck' position.

When you walk, you are presenting your whole upright body to the wind, which is less aerodynamic than a cyclist in the 'tuck'.

The mass is the same. A walker's Cd is greater. A walker's frontal area is greater. A walker's tyre Crr is zero. A walker's transmission losses are zero.

5 kmh, 32 kmh headwind, Walker = 60 Watts, Cyclist in 'tuck' = 40 Watts.

On nearly all my longest journy's', I've had a tail wind on the way home. One was so good it pushed me up a hill, without pedalling(!) in Buxton! Which is good, because I'm always knackered on the way back!
