I broke the origal swaged steel chainset on my fixed wheel Carlton once (just easing back on the pedals to slow at a minor junction there was a snapping noise and I found myself freewheeling - chainwheel spinning on crank where it was it should have been riveted on) and that resulted in an 8 mile walk home. I did try to phone several people, none of whom answered but of course they all called me back after I got home!

On my first proper ride on my Viscount Aerospace after I built it first time round the chain dropped over the big sprocket (yes I should sack my mechanic for not double checking mech adjustment!) and somehow got well and truly wedged between the spokes and the freewheel block. I had many tools but nothing to split the chain or remove the block so it took the best part of an hour of swearing to coax it back out again while I seriously considered lobbing the bike over the hedge and walking home for the car!

...but isn't it a wonderful story? I particularly enjoyed reading of the problems with the misquotes:biggrin::biggrin:.

I have had the walk of shame twice - once for a snapped chain where I had a spare quick link but have left my tool at home. The other was snapped forks, not a lot I could do to repair that at the roadside.
