Just about to buy a set of AyUps for 20 mile each way commute. About 60% unlit country lanes.

Are there any others worth considering ? The Fenix P3D looks good but not sure on battery life and duration.

Seems a lot of money but figure you get what you pay for?

Having bit of a dilemma with the colour aswell, too many choices !!

A bit OT I hadn't seen the Ayups in the flesh before today, and I was impressed at how compact a unit they are.

Indeed, but with me it's mental insurance if I had the MTB set. Reason for my paranoia on lighting - My first serious lighting I had was a set of Smarts (bottle cage battery), and they were good. But the battery was crap. I had recharged the battery ready for a night ride home. Cycling out to a meeting in daylight, cycling home at night. Set off back from the meeting in the dark. Lights failed after five minutes. Basically the battery died completely. Dead as a parrot. I was left cycling eleven miles along unlit country lanes with nothing but an old Everyready-type front light. It was not a pleasant experience. Ever since then I admit to being paranoid about battery run times and levels of illumination!

That's the nice thing about the Fenix lights - you can buy replacement batteries virtually anywhere.

I was lucky enough to get to try out a few light sets about a year ago for night-time roadie-trundles around the Hampshire lanes. I don't think the Ayups were out then, which is a pity as they look good.

I felt that the lights specifically marketed for road use had a too-narrow beam and it felt like you were riding down a very narrow tunnel. I was more comfortable on the road with the wider-beamed MTB lights, which gave a wider but less distant field of vision. I'm sure its a personal thing, but the reviews of lights knocking around last autumn (I think there was one in C+) seemed to regard wide beams as unnecessary for road use.

don't get me wrong, I'd have bought the twin set if I could afford it.

I can't even afford the single set at the moment
