Hi!

Looking to buy my first road bike. Stock is pretty scarce so not a huge number of options but these are what I have so far, to be honest I know very little about bikes so would appreciate any advice. I want to use it for getting around town, maybe to work, and a couple of hours on the weekend - don't think I'll honestly use it in rain etc. Are any of the below decent or should I spend more for a Trek etc?

Are you sure of the size you need? The Merida for example is only available in ML, so you'll need to be at least 5'8 probably. The other models might be available in the very small or large sizes, so if you need an S being 5'4-5'7ish you might struggle

If you really know nothing, you'd be much better off buying from a local shop. You'll pay more for a Trek, as you're paying for the brand (and to a minor extent for the lifetime frame warranty)

I’d second the above, you’re better off if starting out to go to a bricks and mortar shop and try them out, pretty much essential for fit too which is all important. You’ll also have somewhere to run too if you have problems.
Trek is a top marketed brand so you’ll pay more for the similar spec elsewhere but they do have a excellent warranty. The ones on your list are more or less in house brands so can represent good VfM.

Edit: Also have a look at Decathlon who have some great bikes at great prices plus a good warranty.

Thanks all! Sorry should have said - 5'9, have gone into Evans and 54 fit seemed best (but that was just for Trek). Will definitely try to go to a local store - having an issue at the moment that stock is so low and I'm in London so not many places even have anything to try! Will keep an eye on Decathlon too - thanks!

Accepting that if you know nothing , it may be hard to spot a good one, but have you considered second-hand, even if bought from a shop. There are a few around if you look hard enough, and if you could get a friend, or even local bike shop, to check it over you could get a better bike for the same money.

Where are you and how tall are you?
For example this looks very tidy for £500 if you're in SW London and 5'8-5'10ish

My wife bought the ladies beginner road bike from decathlon, and feels pretty comfortable with it
(Hadn’t previously used drop bars). I asked decathlon via Twitter if she could get refund if she didn’t like it after a few days. Was told yes, as long as it still looked new.

Stock was difficult, but I found if I checked the website about midnight that bikes would briefly appear back in stock for online order
