I saw a programme the other month were they were doing a "dog poo clean up" for charity. They were being sponsored to pick up dog dumps in a local park, many of them weeks old with fungus on them!xx( This was on the local news at tea time which kind of put me off my pork chop spuds and veg! To me that is more civic minded than running cycling walking etc where nothing is achieved apart from someone burning up a few calories. Shame on the dirty devils though who made that charity event possible!
they should try going to the countryside... there's sh!t everywhere!

Lefty tighty. Get it righty.
Maybe this would be a good time to announce an idea that I've had for a while. I'm seeking sponsors for an Impressive Feat of Endurance that I am planning.

To avoid the possibilty of me becoming smug about all the money I've gathered, or the sponsors being similarly smug about the size of their donations, strict rules of secrecy will apply: You are not allowed to tell me, or anyone else, that you are sponsoring me.

To avoid the possibility of me seeking personal glory for the impressiveness of my feat - and also to prevent people from sneering at it, because they perform impressiver feats before breakfast, I'm not going to tell you what or when it is.

To avoid the possibility of me railroading you into supporting a charity you don't like, you get to donate to a charity of your choice.

This way the charities get to benefit, and no-one does anything for the vainglorious reasons.

Are you in? If you are: don't tell anyone.

There has to be some level of effort involved but it's a personal thing. For one person to walk 5 miles may be a far bigger challenge than for me to cycle 100 miles so I take charity requests on an as received basis.

A couple of years ago I rode to Wootten Bassett with others from this forum to raise money for Help for Heroes (242 miles round trip). Just prior to the ride, I rode to Ashford (about 50 miles) to a H4H fund raiser, everyone assumed THAT was the sponsored ride!

Also the charity plays a huge role. At the time of the WB ride, H4H were very much of their time and I raised £3000. Fast forward two years and riding LEL for Mind only raised £1000.

Still not decided what to ride or who for this year yet. Possibly McMillan Nurses as I've received a request for that but not sure where to ride to yet.

Here's an idea: if you don't want to sponsor somebody, don't.

Did the dude on the right get sponsored to wear that mingin' tax disc get up ??
Nice countryside photo though.
That was avant garde at the time I'll have you know. It's the "Bloody Cyclists" jersey of its year.

I know a few guys who are doing a Dryathlon over the month of January for a cancer charity. This involves not drinking alcohol for the month of January and being sponsored. One of the guys barely drinks anyway so there is no real sacrifice or challenge involved and even so it shouldnt take someone to get sponsored to not drink for a month.

Call me an old curmudgeonly skinflint, but... in the past year, I've had about 15 requests to sponsor people via 'justgiving', a handful of requests for various sponsored events by people at work, a scout or guide doing bagpacking nearly every time I go to the supermarket, the big-issue seller I pass by almost every working day, chuggers on the high street so in-yer-face that I sometimes choose not to go there because of them, and so on.
I do give to charity, and I buy stuff at charity shops on a regular basis, but so much charity defeats itself, as people get fed up with it.

Add to that, I did a cycle tour last year, 8 days on the road, 550 miles or so covered... and yes, I got/get asked the 'are you doing/did you do it for charity?' question fairly often. No, I did it for my own mental well-being and enjoyment. Although that's a bit of a conversation-killer
