Quad bikes might be the reason for that. There are plenty of them in France, used a lot by farmers, viticulteurs, etc. Maybe a 'bent looks like a quad bike so they're OK with them...

I encounter a lot of horses on the trike, and talking to them is what seems to make the biggest difference.
I did once get a couple of horses that just weren't having any of it, stood up, off the trike, talking to them, the works, they just weren't interested. After realising we couldn't get past them without spooking them, I suggested that the riders take them into the field next to us, which they did, and we could then go past.
