Hi all,

We're looking at going to Berlin this summer. Anyone got any recommendations for interesting things to see and do - especially from a family / young children point of view?

Cheers

Berlin Zoo?

I'm not really sure it's a destination with small kids unless they like museums and art, suggestions here

There's a big waterpark 50km south apparently

Take a boat trip on the River Spree - link here.
I have taken them going east from the centre towards Köpenick (nice old town centre, popular on a Sunday) and the Grosser Müggelsee lake, but they also run westwards towards Wannsee.

Go up the TV Tower (Fernsehturm) on Alexanderplatz. Beware of waiting times at busy periods, though if I recall correctly you can buy them in advance for timed slots.

Eat Currywurst from a street stand (not fine cuisine, but fun - once).

Another favourite of mine that gets less attention in tourist guides than I think it deserves is the enormous Soviet war memorial (Sowjetisches Ehrenmal) in Treptower Park. It's maybe not so impressive for small children, but you could always try and interpret the characters and themes on the array of neoclassical friezes on the huge marble panels that line the way to the monument.

Oh, our kids are very advanced for their age and already have opinions on things like chiaroscuro and postcolonialism. That is, when they're not drooling and filling their nappies.

Here for rides.
Yep. The Zoo is good. I found the nearby gaslight museum fascinating. (tlh is pissing herself laughing at me) The Holocaust Memorial is popular with children who use it a maze. Reichstag. Brandenberg Gate at night. Ride on a tram. Walk in the Tiergarten.

Topography of Terror is the single most powerful museum I've ever visited but ain't for the little ones.

I think it was near to CP Charlie that there was an exhibition dedicated to the various attempts to get through the wall that I found interesting. However, it was almost 25 years ago that I was there so it may be closed and I may have the location wrong!
