Hi Members!

Ive recently joined this site and its a really good site!

I bought a Giant Revel 3 MTB a few months ago without really looking into cycling and i must have
done less than 500 miles so its in quiet good condition with paperwork!

I commute to work which is 10 miles away and should be geting a roadbike instead!

my question is where would be the best place to sell the bike so i can get the most possible money
from it?

thanks in advance!

Look at a thread i did to do with 'Clean that Chain!'.... Get it looking spanking new and put it in classified's on here or do it by private ads i guess? But its like with food i guess, the first bite is with the eye.... Gd luck mate

I would try Gumtree in your local area first as it's fairly well known and free.
Also obviously post a thread in the Classifieds here, on the CTC forum and Bikeradar forum.

Failing that maybe Ebay but the fees can be a bit high!

Ebay will get you your biggest audience, but don't list on ebay and on here as that's not allowed, and if you put it on ebay don't link to it from here either or you will get slapped by admin..............it needs to be one or the other.

As said, ebay fees can be giddy, eg: a selling price of £300 will incur final valuation fees of £40, and if paying with PayPal their fees will be just over £10 as well  So your under £300 is under £250 before you know it.

Listing fees are pretty low if you do it as an auction and keep the starting bid low, but you need your wits about you to ensure you don't get caught out and end up selling it for a song.

You can also send an invoice from PayPal, or people can pay you via PayPal gift, that way you avoid the ebay fees, and with PayPal gift you even avoid the PP fees as well

IMHO I'd whack it on ebay for the audience it gets you, and the fact it should only cost about 40p, (use a photo hosting site like THIS to put pictures on the ad). You only get one photo for free, and this way you avoid the listing fees for additional photos too. Then if someone contacts you about the bike you can negotiate and maybe end it early. If no one bites you can still end it even if it has bids on, but make sure there are more than 12 hours remaining or you can't do it. This may seem a bit unethical to some, but all's fair in love and business IMHO

list the bike on ebay with a 99p starting price. add lots of pictures for free using something like photobucket. state in the add that the bike is advertised locally. you will get plenty of offers from people wishing to buy cash and not go through ebay. you can remove the bike from auction and cancel any bids but only if there is longer than 12hours remaining before the end. i use this method regularly and save on ebay fees but it gives you a massive audience. if you list the bike for 10 days and cancel the auction before the last 12 hours you are getting very good advertising for free. not exactly within ebay's rules but lots of folks do it.

Somebody on another forum sold a 1 month old town bike on ebay. They got about £60 for it, after having paid £120+. Ouch!

I'd avoid eBay if I were you. I've just sold a town bike which went for a good price but the buyer insisted on paying by PayPal so my fees were nearly £15.

So in summary I would say SELLER BEWARE!!

If someone wanted to collect from me I'd NEVER allow them to pay with PayPal. If they are collecting there is absolutely no reason, (in my book) why they can't pay cash. If they want to pay with PayPal then they pay P&P and the item gets delivered to a confirmed UK address. If the address is not confirmed their money is refunded until they either get it confirmed or they turn up with a fistful of £'s, simple

I do however fully agree with your last comment

When I sell large items I always state boldly that the item is for Cash on Collection only, and never had anyone complain. As smokeysmoos said, I cant see the point in the buyer having a particular preference in paying Via PP if they are coming to collect anyway. In addition I feel most of the time this gives the buyer confidence as they are in control of the purchase until when they get to see the item and are 100% satisfied with it.

Rather than all the 'Hassle' of e-bay etc.... I would just try some private adverts and see what happens . If the bike is tidy enough i should imagine it won't take long to be 'snapped up!' provided your price is reasonable? If you are not sure what price to ask then just do some homework on the internet. Some people prefer a private seller; As previously mentioned by myself, clean the chain etc... and make it look like its been very well looked after to justify your asking price. Good luck with it anyway.
