This is excellent. I especially like the last paragraph about treating yourself to a decent bike. I recently treated myself to a 60th birthday present of a rather naughty Bianchi and I'm loving it.... and yes, a lighter, stiffer bike does make you faster and is more fun!

And I've just bought a rather capable MTB, after breaking my spine !! Growing old disgracefully. How's the bike going ?

Well some folk think I'm completely mad at work by jumping back on the bike.
I admire you lots: every time I come off the bike (never due to cars so far I must add) I get the feeling " don't wanna ride this bike no more" :B)
I still do ride it, truly don't know if I would after crashing with a motorized vehicle.
