Delighted as I am to have provided you with a little light relief, I would recommend that you have a look at Berlin Game, the start of a story which runs over a subsequent eight books. The reason I include the venerable Len is that the characters in this series are IMHO the most three dimensional and realistic outside of Tolstoy.

Len Deighton wrote some good stuff IMO. 'Winter' and 'Bomber' were my favourites.
Authors I like also include Graham Greene (esp. Power and the Glory, Quiet American)
John le Carre
Anthony Trollope
