That's what I don't get about giant, I'm a 54cm in all bikes bar cube which is a 56cm. What is sooooo different with giant where I would need an M

Geometry? TT length. How tall are you? I tried a medium defy before buying a Medium avail, gelt massive, but perhaps down to long stem and wide bars in my case. Think the us website gives full geometry tables

There's nothing really to get, just measured differently, as all manufacturers seem to do. Doesn't matter what the sticker says as long as it fits

Very compact geometry & steeply sloping top tubes.

I normally take a Large 57 or 58 frame size but bought a Large Giant Defy (2nd hand) which was just too big.

What I really needed at the time was a M/L frame which wasn't available in 2010.

For reference I am 6ft 0 & ride a 58cm Cube & a 57cm Sintesi.

I've been looking at trade off's in components in different bikes eg giant defy 0 ultegra 2015 versus felt z75 105 disc 2015

Both bikes look the business in their new colour schemes

Giants numeric sizing is of the seat tube so when they say 53.5 = ML it is the seat tube which is 53.5 mm.

i am pretty certain that giants numeric sizing is based on the seat tube, so 53.5 is the length of the vertical tube not the top tube. im not sure what other brands go by but it seems to me the key measurement for horizontal comparisons is the effective top tube length aka horizontal tt length, which is given on almost all road bike geometry charts, and is as i see it the length from bum to hands give or take if you were riding with saddle level to handlebar.


for example looking at the cannondale site, the synapse geometry/sizing appears based on the effective tt length so a "54" has a 54 cm horizontal. by the same token the giant with the same horizontal or nearest, is the M with a 54.5 cm horizontal. The sticker on the giant M would say "50", this being the vertical tube length.

i dont see what there is to "get" as such... you can get a rough idea of what size to try by comparing geometry charts with known bike geometries ie you could measure your peugeots effective tt length. then go and try outs, thats when things like shortening the stem etc start to come into play.

i dont see what the slope of the tt had to do with it. surely if giants came up big at the designated size and this was owing to a steeper sloping top, then a 54 cm giant bike with a steep sloped 54 cm long tube would actually come up smaller than shallower or horizontal 54s.

it is because their numbers refer to the vertical tube, once youve got that you can see they are roughly the same as their peers.

your post does emphasise the value of try before you buy as for eg, i road tested a synapse size 56 when i got my giant, and that felt a lot bigger than the giant even though they are nominally about the same size.

I can recommend the Giant Defy 0 2015, a good mix of ultegra and 105 and got a great deal at my LBS, was priced at £999, however, I got 20% off for being a member of a local cycling club so I got a great bike at a great price, well pleased
