So committing to a monthly repayment with money they may not have is a good idea?

Most of the bikes I know of that have been purchased this way are not in use, I would imagine many have already been sold before the (free) payments are finished.

It's a good idea for ME

3000 miles a year on a £10 recycled singlespeed? Whether it's borrowed, free, taxpayer funded or whatever- I'm sleeping easy tonight!

I think you make up a small percentage of the people who take out these purchase/hire agreements.

I think you're probably right. I suppose it's cheaper for the government to let you off with a bit of tax, rather than encouraging cycling in more meaningful ways.

Driver education? Improved roads? Cycle lanes? Not very rock'n'roll, is it?

What's wrong with letting those more likely on lower incomes get access to bike via a lower monthly payment than having to stump up in full ? I wouldn't have bought a bike if it wasn't for the cost savings of c2w, and now I love it.
But because it's a tax incentive, the saving is actually greater for those on a higher income.

For me it was great and got me back into road cycling. I bought a bike that was originally £700 (last years model) and will be paying just over £250 for it. Without finding a bargain bike and having access to C2W I would still be sat on my arse having got a bit bored of my MTB. Saying that I have spent way more than £250 on bike fit, new wheels, lycra etc. I will probably get flamed for it, but I would prefer tax breaks were given to working cyclists rather than spent on dangerous cycle paths that riders refuse to use or police forces giving out free locks.

Giant Defy 0 for £999 with part Ultegra mixed group set, Cube Peloton Race or Pro or a Felt F series bike of a similar value are probably the best readily available for £1k.

Boardman CX Team at £899 if you like disc brakes is a good bike.

The out & out best value to spec & quality though are not available on C2W & these come from either Canyon or Rose in Germany.
This is where the smart money seems to be going.

Yep I am definitely a fan (and I use it for commuting bikes) but the one thing I don't like is they (and the bike shops) tout savings in the region of 30-40% but the reality is you'd never save that much. Coz once you've paid the fair market value to re-hire or buy-back you're in 25% or less savings category.

So still a good saving but not as big as they make out and that is equivalentmis-selling in my book.

WOW! A sensible answer to the actual question I asked!

It'll never catch on.

I'm interested in that Canyon, it does seem good for the money. Now, if there was somewhere I could look at one and maybe have a test ride... A bicycle shop, perhaps?

Only in Germany. Go to a popular cycling cake stop spot on a weekend and you'll like see a few. Test ride, only if you know someone with one!

The problem with buying German bikes not only rules out Cyclescheme and the likes but getting faults fixed. I am in a situation where I have paid £1500 for a bike, the bloody thing sounds like a bag of spanners when riding, I have just forked out £55 for a mech to try and fix, they refitted the guards, did an M check (I think thats code for assembly greasing everything) and checked the torque on everything but it still sounds like a bag of spanners.

Two months old and I am considering selling and taking the hit. See what the manufacture says

Yeah, I think it's another reason they can afford to sell them for cheap; they are highly unlikely to have any sent back as for most people it'll just be too much hassle.

OK, best value road bikes seem to come from Ribble, Planet X and Btwin, but what's everyone's experiences and opinions?

Is the budget carbon option better than a quality aluminium frame? I'll be mainly using the bike for day rides and hopefully Sportive events, and continuing to use my mighty Falcon singlespeed 'Aryton' for commuting! ;)

Looks like I've finally got my work to adopt the scheme.
I've just ordered a Dolan Letape with Sram 22 via the scheme, Dolan have been really good with advice about fit and set-up, build is only 15 working days so should arrive mid June

I've just changed my order with merlin cycles, was getting a sensa lombardia but have switched to the malt cr-Sl. Just couldn't shake of off the feeling that the sensa was too heavy for a modern carbon bike. It is a rare instance of head over heart for me. Who knows I might even get competitive!!

Full 105. T700 carbon. Modern frame thinking with did di2 future proofing. Shimano wheelset. Fizik saddle. Looking forward to some long days out at a goodly pace!
