I've stayed on quite a few campsites, hundreds in fact and not just Europe, but also north and south America, Africa, Asia, Australasia.
The best site ever was on the island of Texel, north of Den Haag in Holland

Each pitch has its own personal loo and shower block with washing up facilities

I spoke to the owner about the cost, he reckoned it would pay back in about 5 years, as it meant that he did not have to employ staff to clean the toilets/shower block every two hours day in and day out.
I'm just waiting for more sites to follow suit

Actually that is damn useful to know, as it's slap bang between where I live and the parents, and it's not a part of the world I'd normally get excited about spending an overnight.

In Spain, Luarca campsite is perched on some fantastic cliffs.
In Netherlands, the car-free island of Vlieland has a couple of great ones.
The best one in Norfolk is High Sands Creek in Stiffkey, right on the coast.

This is a good time to dig this post out. But be aware it was started in 2009 and some of these camp sites may no longer exist.
