Looking for a road bike to use for my commute to and from work. It's pretty short, maybe 20 minutes maximum! However I do it every day and my old second hand bike is crumbling... got a puncture today and took it to the bike shop (having been planning on getting it MOT'd in any case, as it feels a bit wobbly!) where they basically implied the sooner I got rid of it, the better, and if I were to fix it I'd be looking at £200+ to replace the most obvious dead bits.

...in which case I may as well get a new bike.

TL;DR I am looking for a commuter bike, nothing special, for around £300

I had a second hand bike because I was worried a new one would be stolen. Going to investigate whether my place of work has secure bicycle parking, but anybody have any recommendations for the best kind of insurance? Do they insist on secure parking as a condition of getting it insured? I currently leave mine on the street :/

Thanks!

a secondhand Triban 3. about £250-280 secondhand on ebay which is an absolute steal for that price if you dont mind secondhand bikes.

great bike for the money

Insurance through home policy, add away from home cover, get a serious d lock (abus granit or kryptonite New York fahg), check Ts&Cs

Do you want a drop bar or flat bar road bike or don't care?

Prefer drop bar as that's what I'm used to but I guess if it was the right bike I wouldn't mind! And thanks for the advice about insurance, I'll see what my home insurance can add on.

RoubaixCube - thanks! I'll look into those, heard good things about the B-Twin bikes and didn't realise there were so many decent looking available 2nd hand!

triban 500 se is £330 new atm

Depends if the OP can stretch his budget. £250 is better than £330.

Also for a 20min commute i dont think it matter exactly so much what you ride unless you go into some extremes like off road and hilly terrain.

Indeed , i think it was around £300 so i thought it might be worth a punt .
Halfords have the road sport for 337 .
Does @Feastie want a bike with eyelts for rack and gaurds and what type of roads do you ride ?, with regards to insurance most say you need to use an approved lock afaik .
It might be worth the second hand route as i bet you can pick up some bargains or could you or someone you know repair your current bike for a lot less than the LBS as their pricing i assume includes labour ? i would be happy to fix it if you provided the parts but your a bit far away .

Less another £75 with £30 of British Cycling membership, not to mention 3% cash back from Quidco ;)
