@Feastie 2nd is always best in my eyes some great bargains out there either on retro or more modern road bikes

just a note i normally have a few 2nd hand road bikes for sale and you and anybody else is always welcome to come and try them to see if its what you really want , most of them have been serviced before sale

Build your own. That way you'll get exactly what you want.

Wow - surprised to read that, thanks for sharing. Lighter and better are not the same though; I'd take my Tiagra over my Apex any day.
I actually prefer shimano feel but that might be down to riding with it all week on the commuter so im used to it i guess , i did start a thread about changing it to the new 4700 tiagra or 5700 105 but i needed new wheels as the old ones about to disintegrate after a good 10000 miles or so and my headset is crunchy / family needs food etc so thats on the back burner .I really think when it gets down to what shifters you like its really down to personal feel .

Cheers for all the advice guys! Going to walk over to Halfords tomorrow and see if I can try out the Boardman as the price is really very reasonable and I'd much prefer to try it out first. Perk of second hand bike shops is taking it out for a quick pootle :P

@Mike Watson - I'd love to but I'm sadly not bike savvy enough to dare building my own bike! Can just about change a punctured tyre and alter my brakes, everything else is uncharted territory...

@cyberknight - yep I'd ideally like a bike I can stick a bike rack onto as I'm all about bungee roping my shopping onto the back! I wouldn't have asked about that actually, just assumed all bikes could take a bike rack so thanks for the heads-up. Currently I ride mostly just poorly maintained tarmac roads (Leeds...). Cheers for the tip about the lock.

afaik the boardman road bikes havent got upper rack points but you could always use a rack that attatches tot he brake bridge or for lighter loads a seatpost rack or even p clips on the frame.Another option is seatpost collar with an extension for a rack point .

I bought a really cheap viking fixie for the commute when I wanted something with drop bars and not too nickable, Peterborough is a bit flatter than Leeds though. Done over 6k miles on that bike before I changed job which necessitated me driving and its been untouched for over a year and I've bought a lighter more flexible Kinesis T2 that I can use for a part commute or a hillier one. Never fitted a rack but it does have eyelets for one and the full guards which are fitted just now.
