Best cycling route to Findon from the north

I'm going on a group walk next Sunday and we are meeting up at a car park just south of Findon (near Cissbury Ring). I was planning to cycle there from home just outside Horsham. It is trivial to get to Ashington using quiet country lanes but in getting from there to Findon there seems to be no alternative route through the Downs other than the A24, which is a fast dual carriageway. Has anyone cycled on this road and can suggest whether it is feasible (or sensible) to cycle on it? I don't suppose there are any parallel cycle lanes along it, are there?

Hi Al, i've cycled from Lancing to Horsham (Roffey) & back many times, There are a couple of sections on the route you will going that will mean going on/accross busy roads but they really aren't that bad...
