Probably dEUS at the Jericho Tavern in Oxford in, I think, 1991. They somehow managed to combine the most visceral and thrilling noise with intelligent songs and funny lyrics. It left me a lifelong fan of a band most people outside of Belgium won't have heard of...

Or maybe The Pixies at Crystal Palace Bowl - might have been the same year, I don't remember.

Or perhaps my friends, The Egg at Glastonbury in 1994 or 95 (I think). They're still going and still brilliant live.

Or then again, maybe Arthur Lee and Love on the Forever Changes Tour, shortly before he died. A great loss.

Or, finally, maybe Shonen Knife, in Club Quatro in Shibuya, Tokyo, last year. Sheer fun.

Mate at work saw Echo and the Bunnymen "Upstairs at Erics" in Liverpool 30 years ago.

In retrospect, that would have been a spiky marvel.

It would indeed since for the life of me, I cannot bring to mind any "upstairs" at Erics. Erics was a basement club on the same model as the nearby Cavern. In fact, I always used to worry there'd be a fire with all the sweaty condensation running down the walls onto the electricals of the various bands. There simply was no upstairs at Erics. The ground floor level was a tiny little space with the ticket office and then came the spiral stairs downwards. There was no staircase going up. I stand to be corrected of course but as I say, if there was an upstairs, I never heard of it.

Yup. It was good. Very good. And a lot better than the '74 tour.

I never saw Hendrix at the IOW. A mate and I decided to hitch hike to a Hyde Park free concert instead to see.. err .. ??? no idea.
I also didn't see Pink Floyd, even though I was there, floating somewhere above the clouds

Never same Cohen either as I couldn't get a ticket for his O2 tour.

Seen most of my favourites over the years. Some were awful (Lou Reed) and others were better than I ever expected (Richard Thompson) but I never got to see the Ramones which is a shame.
First real gig I ever went to was the Ramones. They were playing at the Apollo in Manchester and were right at their peak at the time. One thing I learned from that though was to leave your seat as soon as possible and get right down the front so you could dance about (pogo at that time) and get out of the confines of your chair.
