On the Sunday London Ride, we went past Joseph Bazalgette's statue on The Embankment and rode along the Greenway, under which his sewer runs. Later ianrauk and I went over Putney bridge, which wikipedia tells me was designed by him too.
 
Best invention? The Wristwatch.
Not a 20th century invention. Men just stuck with pocket watches by choice/fashion

Even Mr Bazalgette was well behind the times. Ancient Roman and Greek cities had a functioning civic sewerage system.
