For a really pretty little sportster you can't beat the original Elan, shame they were unreliable dogs. Mazda's MX5 was a much better made clone.

I came within half a day of buying a Sprint to move all the bits in to my drop head TR7 when I was 19 but fortunately the breakers yard screwed me over on the deal. I think the TR7 would have looked great on the Sprint alloys, but considering how much of a twitchy handful it was standard I'd have been so much twisted metal round a lamppost if I'd actually got the Sprint engine running in it! Replaced the engine with another standard one (head had gone) and sold it on using the money to buy a Mk1 Escort with a 3.5 Rover in it. Lovely car.

A friend of my Dolomite loving mate had a TR7 with a Dolomite Sprint engine fitted way back in the mid eighties. It was quick, I don't know what else was ported over from the Sprint. I always preferred the Dolomite to the TR7 looks-wise, I must be weird. Your your TR7 would of been a handful with a Sprint engine, I always thought they were 116bhp but google suggests 127bhp, pretty impressive for way back then!

Opel Manta MK 1 closely followed by the MK 2 but only in the 1.9SR Belinetta

They are a stunning motor. I always thought if I had some spare cash I'd love a Mk 2 Manta GTE coupe or a MK 2 Astra 16 valve GTE as an affordable classic. One of those would be way cooler/more expensive. I wouldn't know if it's engine would be as good though as 80's early 90's Vauxhall one's were, as its before my time.

Back in the early sixties the German autobahn had this lovely BMW as top dog. Hitch hiking they would woosh by like luxurious wind. One stopped and the driver who looked like Brad Pitt in Born in Tibet (but spoke differently) invited me in.It had a purpose built clutch and braking system because the driver had no legs "Shot down" was his brief explanation leaving me to figure out by whom and for what. I learned a lot during that ride one thing being how much I liked that car.

Jag-D-4 250 bhp.jpeg

Here's the engine of the D Type Jag that I have adored for far too long. It's only 250 bhp but in a light car like a Jag it went like the clappers. About 165 mph in the mid Fifties. The British were very good at engineering once.
