Best 'off-line' GPS Map.

I am currently due an upgrade on my android phone and was thinking of using the old one as a GPS for the bike, do any of you use off-line mapping? That is mapping on a phone that doesn't require any 3G data in case you are not aware.

I don't mind paying but there seems to be a good choice out there with mixed reviews. Currently I have a Bryton Rider 20 that I am using and will continue to use, I only want to use the phone as a kind of bike sat nav as I don't know my way around South Wales having moved there. That and I'm too tight to upgrade the Bryton!

What off-line mapping apps would you recommend and why please? Thanks in advance.

yes, quite limited area although you can extend it to max half of England.

@the bald eagle I recommend Here maps. it is the old nokia maps and is pretty good, you can download countries as you see fit and then set the map to offline and it works very well for turn by turn navigation and options for vehicles or foot, I regularly pop it online when at home map updates and don't have a problem with it at all.

Occasionally if you are searching for a particular building or football ground or whatever at a very local level, the offline detail doesn't pick it up but a quick online search to get the precise location and its happy plotting it offline again.

I work for HERE so I am glad to find that so many people like it. However, I use OSMand for cycling on the rare occasion I am not using OSM via my Garmin
