Syd Barrett - Of 'Shine on you Crazy Diamond' fame. One quote I recall was "On one occasion, I had to pull him off Lynsey (Barrett's girlfriend at the time) because he was beating her over the head with a mandolin" NME in the early 70's. His mental state was questionable, however, his family always maintained he was just unpredictable.

I will venture Ian Hunter, frontman of Mott the Hoople '69-'74. Never one to understate himself, his best known guitar had a giant letter "H" for a body. He's still rocking hard in 2008 at the age of 69, an awesome live performer.

His "Diary of a Rock and Roll Star," published in '74, is still required reading.

The original members of Status Quo were known to be quite adventurous in their formative years.

Yep, the Quo were/are rockers indeed. Mr Parfit has very little of his original heart left (you might call it NOS!) and Mr Rossi famously sneezed the remainder of his septum down the shower plughole long ago. Somewhere I still have a pile of their vinyl as high (and scratched) as an old Marshall stack.

Lots of good ones there (as I resurrect an old thread)....great names and great music.

I'm not gnona claim him as the best 'rock star' ever but Bon Scott has gotta be up there with the best frontmen ever.

Soooo looking forward to Bonfest 2012. 2 nights of Bon Scott ACDC music and beer!!

I do not dislike him, nor ACDC post-Bon, but there is just something about Bon's voice and the early stuff which I love. The "sound" of ACDC has not really moved on since Bon died so I reckon that is testament to how much he influenced them. Johnson has been lead singer for a lot longer than Bon ever was, and has taken ACDC to a much higher plane in global terms...so I am probably in the minority. Brian Johnston sings "Bon Scott" ACDC songs really well. ButI reckon if Bon had lived he would have taken them in a different direction - which may seem silly as they are HUGE. Bon had a charm which I don't think anyone has ever matched; he was raw and crude...but insightful. And I can still play Bon ACDC and be excited by it, and play it to my teenage daughter and her frends, who are all "rock/cool" nobbers - they "know" Bon Scott and it's the only time I am not seen as a crusty old git.

Good call Noods, I couldve written (most of) that myself. I love the raw, under-produced, tongue in cheek early stuff.
AC/DC - Scotland's greatest ever band??

If you like 'the music scene' you could do worse than to read 'Black Vinyl, white powder' by Simon Napier-Bell. He has an encyclopaedic knowledge of the music scene from the 50s right up to today. The bands, acts and artists of the changing times are described in some detail and the prevalent drug that heralded the music of the time is chronicled. Some of the activities described by some of the biggest stars of the day have the ability to truly shock. Of the most depraved, he reckons Led Zep were the standard bearers with Bonham out-grossing Plant and Page. What they got up to makes Jagger, Richards and Watts (Wyman a refusenik when it came to drugs of any sort) look like altar boys. Highly recommended for all pop/rock music fans.
