I know a few of the regular Fife commuters post here. (Have met a few on the road).

What is the best route to the Gyle - is it still Kirkliston - Newbridge then past the airport or is there a way from Cramond Brig?.

I'll be with my wife (we've decided this year that we shall not use the car to shop if poss) and as this will only be my 2nd ride after recovery from a hit and run, want one which is relatively traffic free.

I try to avoid the dual carriageway past the airport and prefer the back road on the north of the airport. I do not know the full detail of the route as I do not ride it that often. However, head up the hill from the Cramond Brig and then take the next left toward the Army Camp and Kirkiston. Stay on this road till you go under the first railway bridge, about a further 1/2 mile turn right up the hill. Follow to Dalmeny. In Dalmeny look out for the cycle route sign (roughly at the 90 degree bend in the road) and follow through South Queensferry to the bridge. If I am honest, the route signing is poor and the last mile demands following your nose around the backstreets of the town.

Congrats for getting back on the bike, I hope things are sorted now.

I don't know about coming from the Gyle but coming from town the route I've found is by crammond brig, the airport (burn shot road), Standing Stane Rd, the QE yard and south queensferry. For Less traffic rather than going by the QE yard I'd continue on Standing Stane Road to Dalmeny and go up under the bridge. There's always the NCN1 from Edinburgh for less traffic again but you probably know the short comings of that.

I do this route a lot.

Best way is down to Newbridge via Kirky and then along past the RBS. If your using the cyclepath on the south side of the dual carriageway then you go over the RBS bridge and down to the gyle roundabout on the north side. You can then get on to the gyle roads by either nipping left at the maybury casino and backtracking back along or just use the gyle roundabout at the end of the bypass.

Although it's very very busy at times it's really no problem at all. I just keep to the main dual carriageway and the only diogy bit is the slip road coming up from the airport. Cars come up from there at some speed.

Sorry. Should have read you full post:blush:

If you want a more traffic free route then from South Queensferry get on to the Kirkliston road (A8000). There is a new cycle path down the righthand side all the way to Kirkliston + the road itself is much quieter now anyway.

Through Kirkliston and turn left over the Almond before you reach the old Mill. This is a back road which comes out at Newbridge. There is then an off-road cyclepath which goes all the way to the Gyle.

You need to cross over the footbridge to the south side of the road in Newbridge

Took the NCN 1 from bridge through SQ and past Agilent - then turned onto Standing Stane road (wife wanted to go ont the cyclepath to Newbridge - but post accident my wrist and ribs are still sore so I didn;t fancy slipping around on the mud) then onto Kirkliston took back road to Newbridge - south side of road to Gyle.

On way back just took Maybury road (speed easily maintained with few days shopping, 4 litres of milk and a couple of bottles of wine in the panniers!) then picked up NCN 1 at Cramind Brig.

Did you go down towards Turnhouse 1st and then the back road to bring you out along from Cramond Brig or just straight down the main road from the Maybury towards the Barnton.

I've always wanted to try that way but it looks a bit hairy for bikes.

i`ve tried all the routes to and from Edinburgh and the best and puncture free one is the the route which passes via Royal Elizabeth yard, its fairly quiet, good surface to ride on. I`ve done the Airport road and the cyclepath is rubbish and riding on the road is dodgy to say the least. Stick to quiet roads, the one which goes down the old A8000 and then via the yard and onto crammond brig is best of the lot.

Went straight Maybury to Barnton then crossed over to pick up the cyclepath at Brae Park.

Was ok as there is a 40 limit on Maybury road.
