Heya all,

New to the forum here and hopefully will be coming back to riding :-)

My budget is around £300 and I'm primarily looking for a hybrid for riding around town (and a few visits to the park).

At the moment, I've reduced the shortlist to three: the Merida Speeder I8 (£299), GT Transeo 5.0 (£249) and the Trek 7.2 FX 2009 (£330)

Have any of you had any experience with these? Any other recommendations will also be most welcome! :-)

Thanks in advance

I have a trek 7.1fx, the one below the 7.2. Very nice and done around 2,500 miles on it with little issues.

I've got a Trek and they're great. But the Merida looks like a real bargain.

A hub gear bike for £300 is great value. And Merida's, though a lesser known brand, are excellent bikes.

You'll appreciate the low maintenance of hub gears.

I have been look at Merinda road bikes for the wife and they seem to be pretty good for the money. I personally hate the look of the GT I know its not all down to looks but I just don't like the frame.

I know its said a lot on here but have you thought about a 2nd hand bike you will get so much more for your money?

All - thanks for your replies. I managed to find another place that sells the Trek 7.2 FX but at £299 which makes it more attractive. I *think* I may go with it

But I'll be interested to go for a better bike - down the 2nd hand way tbh. However, I have to be honest that I haven't been having much luck. I saw a couple on Gumtree and - I guess by the phone behaviour of the "seller" - they seem to be stolen :-(...I'm sorry buying anything stolen just goes against my principals tbh!

Do you have any recommendations for places to look for legit 2nd hand bikes? Any particular 2nd hand bikes to look out for in £300 range? Does insurance still cover 2nd hand goods I wonder?

Cheers in advanced

Another Trek 7.2 FX rider here... I was lucky to find a lightly used one in my size and great condition (via a local advert in my village!). It's serving me well so far, no problems or issues.
