I doubt you'd get a bottle jack in if the lock had been sited correctly, most gold standard u locks will last around 3 minutes against powered cutting tools but that's some determined scroat

The one I mentioned is as close to the OP's price point as possible and is gold rated, hence I think fits his criteria the best
I have the Onguard Pitbull mini - fairly easy to fill the shackle (and so prevent there being space for a jack or a lever to break the lock).

I have a Masterlock Street Fortum D lock. It's Sold Secure Gold rated and cheap. You can get it for under £30 including a cable loop for the front wheel. I put my two bikes on my house contents insurance as well. £1500 of cover for £22 pa. Unlike some expensive bike-specific insurance policies, they don't specify a security rating and they don't have ludicrous weasel get-out clauses in the small print.

BTW, the Evolution Mini can sometimes be a bit small if you want to lock your frame and wheel to a chunky piece of street furniture.

I use a Abus x plus 54 to secure my bike around Oxford. I still have my bike, which is probably more attractive than most to thieves. friends who secured far cheaper bikes with cheaper locks do not. I paid ~ £50 on ebay last year, which is far cheaper than a new bike. That said if you are only leaving your bike in a low crime area for a little while, a cheaper lock would do for now, just don't waste your money on a cheap cable lock. D locks are obviously heavier, but way more secure.

I have a magnum d lock in reserve, which is a decent lock under £20. You're not going to get more for your money under that:

I'd invest in something more if I were taking it to Europe though.

Went for the Onguard lock in the end, seemed the best value for money in terms of reviews. Thanks for all the suggestions, I'm sure I'll revisit when I upgrade my bike, and subsequently my lock.

Depends where in Europe tbh. Some countries would laugh at you even locking it up at all!

Really? Which ones?

I've recently come back from Sweden and Denmark hardly any bikes were locked up in the city centre. Loads of bikes....

Sweden and Denmark sprung to mind. A few people I know were the talk of the town in Sweden when they first moved out there, as were seen locking their bikes up in town.

I feel it's more about the inconvenience of losing your bike rather than the likelyhood of it going. Even if there's a slim chance of it being stolen and it's not the norm to lock it, I still wouldn't think twice.
