A friend of mine said, a long time ago, that he would only start placing bets when he heard of bookmakers going broke. Seemed a good idea to me.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When I did got to the local dog track quite often years ago, the car park told a story where the bookies arrived in Jags and Mercs whereas the punters arrived in rusty Escorts. There's a moral in that somewhere:wacko:

In 1974 as a 18 year old the guy I was doing a bit of work for took me into the betting shop, he put £100 on a horse and 10 minutes later the horse came nowhere and he was £100 worse off, that put me off betting for life and I had not even started. A 5 tickets a pound charity tombola is about my limit.

That said as many of you know I once had a couple of car sites, buying and selling cars for a living is a lottery and I still do quite a few, so I suppose I am bit involved in the betting scene.

I'm not a gambler at all. I've never even been in a betting shop. I've never been tempted by those online gambling sites either.

Having said that, I did play the blackjack tables and slots in Las Vegas. That was money I put aside specifically to lose gambling. I must say I enjoyed blackjack in a Vegas casino but not for the gambling but the experience of doing it. I'd already conceded that I'd lose the money even before boarding the plane at Heathrow.

Also, we do buy 1 line on the Saturday lotto draw. That's more OH than me though.

A couple of months ago I bought a piece of land (the end of someone's garden) that a builder has been refused consent to build a house on about 10 years ago. I think that I should be able to get consent for development but it is a complete gamble. Plans are in for consideration at the moment and I find out in January if l have a very expensive allotment or a very cheap building plot.

My late father was a heavy gambler, it caused a lot of upset for my mother and worry for all of us, so I've never gambled. Maybe 25 years ago I had a girlfriend who worked at a Casino, she gave me a free £1 chip, I lost, that reinforced my feelings about gambling.^_^

I've been to the horses a couple of times, taking 20-30 quid for the gambling...I saw it as money lost the same way as I see money lost on beer on a night out.

I find the concept of online gambling too easy, and I can imagine too many people getting carried away

To bet safely you have to understand the difference between betting and gambling. Betting is like going to the cinema or a football match - you pay a sum of money you can easily afford and in return you get something from a few minutes to a few hours entertainment with the possibility of anything from a trivial to a substantial return if you're lucky.

Gambling is just what the name implies - you risk an amount it would it would be damaging to lose for the chance of a big return.

I bet, but I never gamble

Semantics.

I'm crap at betting and odds. I even got told to think again about an each way bet I wanted to put on at the races. I think he said I could put the bet on or just give him the money to pocket, it was the same thing.

I did win a $100 on a fruit machine in Las Vegas, that's the limit of my big time gambling. Mrs C has won a few hundred on the horses after backing a particular stables horses one year.

Oh I won a tenner on the lottery too and a chip maker at the bingo.

I paid for a trip to the Tour of Flanders this year from winning money on betting on cycling. Jolly good it was too.

I lose a quid every Saturday on football.
