I gambled over £80k on Betfair in 2009/10.

Lost around £500 overall. So I either wasted weeks and weeks of my life, or spent £500 on a 2 year hobby.

Way cheaper than cycling ;)

Never been a gambler. However I did once throw my last pound in a time of a little on getting a scratch card and won 70 quid. Much merriment was had by all.

I started an online betting account around 5 years ago with £20. I vowed never to top it up with more money and therefore stop once the money had gone, so I didn't end up losing lots of money on it.

5 years later, I've kept to my word and I now have around £70 on there. Hardly an earth-shattering profit but it's been a nice little bit of fun when I'm watching the football (most of my bets are in-play whilst watching matches).

Overall it's extremely hard to consistently beat the bookies as the odds are stacked so much in their favour. But I've found that if you take the bets you think are really good, rather than just taking a bet for the sake of it then you can edge ahead slightly.

It is possible to beat the odds. Several colleagues including myself 'invested' a total of £40k with a colleague who was a semi pro punter. We all benefitted from an average compound 'interest' of 13%. There was a major scare when he was unable to pay out on the agreed date but everything turned out OK at the end in financial terms but he did lose the friendship of most of the investors.

My investment paid for a substantial part of the cost of my Woodrup Chimera.

My sole solo effort at betting on horses resulted in a loss of £80 at Ripon races and I failed to see what is attractive about a day at the races. Seeing the beasts loping along the home straight failed to remove my disinterest and I finally found pleasure at a small band stand where there was a jazz quartet playing.

We'll agree to differ on that. A field of racehorses in full gallop is one of the most exciting sights you can witness at close quarters.

And it's an excuse to don my Fedora.

If anyones got a few 100 million GBP to spare, there's plenty of money to be made screwing over producers and consumers.

Betting activities should be confined to outcomes that don't matter a jot, such as football.

If I'm going to bet I avoid win, lose and draw options like football, instead I find the likes of tennis better, where the result can either win or lose, not draw
