Myself and a buddy plan to ride the Trans Pennine Trail, Hornsea to Southport, in July. Yes, we know this could be into the prevailing wind and if the forecast is poor we might change to riding West >East. We want to ride East >West to avoid the long train journey back to Lancashire at the end of our ride. Our basic plan is Blackburn >Beverley by train, Beverley >Hornsea and then pick up the TPT on the promenade.

I'd be interested in any observations people have about the TPT in general but in particular I'd like some advice on riding from Beverley Station to Hornsea. The direct route is obviously the A1035, Street View suggests this wouldn't be a lot of fun. I've put together the route below. Does anyone local have any comments or advice on this? We will be on gravel bikes so the surface isn't an issue. I've assumed roads which run alongside drains are similar to those we have in Lancashire which cross large areas of drained and cultivated mosses.

Thanks

I did it over 3 days with B&Bs booked, I actually stayed in Royston Vasey of League of Gentleman game on night one, would recommend it!

This is a local B&B for local folk, I'll have no trouble here!!

It's the obvious choice but sometime the obvious wins, why not take the train to Hull then ride the TPT to Hornsey? It's one of the most pleasant parts of the TPT and worth doing twice.

Apart from that, I did it W<>E a few years back so a few things I remember:

  • Liverpool airport area is a bit grim
  • But after that to Manchester it's quite scenic
  • Some parts of the Manchester route were not well signposted
  • But after that the ride up to Buxton and the Wood head Tunnel crossing is great
  • Penistone can very muddy
  • But it's very pretty!
  • After that it can be dull
  • But it's mostly flat all the way

Edit I also remember the signposting in general being confusing, but the official maps help a lot.

Where is this Hornsey?

Okay, I think I've figured out what to you're trying to do. Where you turn off along the River Hull at Tickton is a 'Bridleway', probably better on a hard tail mtb than Gravel, though doable. I think you will find it 'tricky' where you come off near Leven Canal. I'm not sure how rideable some of it is / legal as in Bridleways etc. Also recently lots of Bridleways foliage has gone a bit 'crazy' and as the area has clay soil some routes stay a tad wet even when labeled Bridleways... (See photo of a local Bridleway...)

#1)I would suggest (bit more 'safe'), at Tickton on the other side of the road is purpose built Cycling path, (shared use) all the way to Leven. Then you could loop back through Leven, Little Leven, to the 'backroads' to Brandsburton. Then follow the route you have mapped.

#2) ride even further up the River Hull Bridleway to 'Bethels Bridge', cross the river and backroads to Brandsburton.

#3) my wife suuggested a boat at Tickton to...

I'll add / edit a local council online map that is useful for off road / Bridleways etc. See below...

As @craigwend says, the cyclepath to Leven is the much better option, used it several times and it's great. When you get to Leven, you can either go through the village and on up to Bradesburton then carry on with the route. This takes you onto the A165 which isn't a great road but you're only on it for about half a mile before you turn off onto back road again. Alternatively, you can turn off in Leven and head straight across to the coast via Catwick, Siggleswick and Seaton. This road is a bit busier but not too bad. Feel free to ask if you want any more info.

Or get to Catwick turn off the second turn to the right as you reach the village, follow the 'unclassified' road for a mile until it gets to the B1243, turn left, backroads to Sigglesthorne, first right in the village (one way) opposite the church...at the end of the short road, turn right for a few hundred yards / metres until you come to a junction, go straight across and follow the single-track road for a few miles... Comes out opposite a golf course on the other road into Hornsea with nice descent into Hornsea with Hornsea Mear on your left. You will pass over TPT as you near Hornsea.

As you may guess I live in the area...

Good choice (don't know why I called it Siggleswick!!!), Wassand Bank/Grundil Lane is really quiet, you rarely see any traffic down there.

Thank you. Originally the train to Beverley was planned to get as close as possible to the start as we had limited time to complete the ride. That's now changed, we now have four days instead of three, but we decided to stick with our original travel plan. We both prefer to avoid out and back which the Hull >Hornsea option would be. Beverley gives a nice opportunity to ride to the start without duplication.

Living in Lancashire we know many sections around Liverpool and Manchester and agree with your general comments. After Manchester it will be all new, though I did try to ride the Glossop side of Woodhead as part of the PCW. That was 25 years ago, things will have changed. On that occasion the surface was so poor I bailed out and used the A628.

Thanks this is very helpful and we will now be riding to Leven as you suggest. Our original plan was at Tickton to join Eske Lane >Holderness Drain >cross the Leven canal >Linleyhill Road >Carr Lane. The problem with this is at the end of Eske Lane Street View stops and doesn't restart until Carr Lane. Roughly a 3.5 mile gap and leap into the unknown - we saw it as all part of the adventure. Your suggestion looks far preferable and a lot more certain.

I also meant Glossop not Buxton, I should really check my map before posting! I think I know the section you mean around Penistone was known for being muddy, I believe it has had extensive work done in recent years to improve it.

@PaulSB when you get to Beverley and come out of the Train station, turn left and go over the railway lines, first left onto Grove hill Road, follow this for a mile or so, until you come to the Roundabout of many traffic lights' go straight accross (second turn) onto Grovehill Road part 2, follow this for half a mile or so.
Turn left and Go over the Bridge over the River Hull (the other way is a dead end to the wonderfully named 'Weel') but anyway head to Tickton on the mainly Single carriage road to Tickton (with the river Hull on the bank to your left) when you come to your first Junction turn right and through the village of Tickton, just before you get to the end of the village you'll see the signs that direct you to the cycle paths to Leven...
