Thanks for the advice, I'll have a look at it when I have time later or tomorrow.
TBH I don't use my phone very much for web stuff and could well manage by simply not using it for online stuff but I'd prefer to have it free of anything untoward
I'd advise doing a factory reset. Clears it down to a new phone, so will removing anything hostile (except on the SD card - if you have one, you might want to reformat it) Last time I did a reset, after I put in my google password, it pretty well set the phone up for me as it had been, including all my apps.

Use SMS Backup + if you want a history of your texts and calls.

I currently have an alert on my phone telling me whatsapp service extended, new expiration date is lifetime. i will be sure not to click on it, in fact I think I will uninstall whatsapp. Thanks for the heads up.
The message was from WhatsApp to all users, to alert them to the fact that it is now subscription-free.

Last resort to me. It's only after you do your first one that you realise how much of the stuff on your phone isn't routinely backed up to the cloud.

It takes at least 2 - 3 hours for me to restore all my stuff following a reset or a custom ROM install.
