I want those mud-guards!!
My mudguards manage to move and then rub if I lean the bike against anything nevermind having someone sat on them. Heck, even my pannier rack wouldn't support the weight of a person.

don;t know what mudguards I have but they're been rock solid since fitted at new, really tight to the wheels, you hardly know they're there

the op thing sounds rather old school and carefree

That seems to be the standard way to travel if you look at the Copenhagenize site (well on a rack rather than a mudguard).

Absolutely!

I once saw three lads on one BMX. One on pedals, honking, one on the saddle, one balanced on the bars, feet dangling either side of the front wheel. You've got to admire the handling skills of the lad pedalling and steering.

A lady at Cyclemagic on Sunday, seeing BikePete and Gromit's tandem told us how in India her family used to carry one person on each seat, a child on each cross bar and one on the rear rack - family of five on one bike...

I tried to carry someone on my bike once - my daughter.

We were doing okay with her sitting on the saddle and me standing up pedaling - until I got a bit ambitious and tried to pedal up a hil that was on a bend in the canal (under a bridge!).

We both fell off - right by some steps - we bounced down the steps - bike, then daughter then me on top of daughter!

I got a lovely soft landing - she was really bruised! I don't think she's forgiven me yet:blush: - but god it was funny!!!!!!

They don't make 'em like they used to. I used to carry a girlfriend sitting on the handlebars of my Raleigh Olympus (only occasionally, it wasn't a permanent thing.....). Imagine trying that on something carbon and twitchy!

Went I went to India a few years back, we saw 5 people on a single bike quite frequently (admittedly, 3 tended to be kids) - it's amazing how they manage to weave through traffic, round potholes, etc. with nobody falling off!

I saw a young woman cycling last night that I felt that many on CC might have appreciated the photo if I had had a camera with me ... young woman ... floaty red summer dress which wasn't managing to completely cover her assets. She did look as though she could be on the Copenhagenize site apart from the full suspension naff BSO underneath her.

I've been part of five on a bike* before, though we only made a couple of yards.

Four people worked and was rideable.

We did stop to walk past the police though (dog unit outside the spoons we passed on the way home - it probably won't surprise you to learn that this was after the pubs had shut and we were all students).

It was our old tandem, I was captaining.
