Just that some are slammed and nose-up because it's the only way the riders are going to reach the pedals, or a more general objection to leather and springs?

The adjustments do make things look uncomfortable. But as you say, short legs, big bike so no choice really.

Those bikes are probably 26x1⅜" tyres (smaller than the 28x1⅝" aka 700c common today) which might be making them look bigger than they are... but some of the kids are still too short for the bikes they're using.
