Do I need to get the spray plaster out?
As in Motorbikes do any of you ride them and is it like riding a pedal bicyle balance wise?

Someone is trying to persuade me that getting on the back of one would be fine... my Mother has instilled a deep sense of fear of the things so... those that do tips please or stuff of things...

The trick to being on the back is to remain in a straight line with the bike so the bike then behaves the same for the pilot and is merely slightly heavier. This is easy to do as when turning, the force on the passenger can only be directly down through the line of the bike so in reality the passenger doesn't have to do anything - and in fact mustn't do anything.

Don't try and stay upright as that would then be the rider steering one way and the passenger the other - this is what my Dad did on his one and only pillion ride with me - more a minor irritation than dangerous to be fair

My Mrs isn't noticeable on the back - presumably because she just goes with the bike so to speak and is from a biker family so was brought up with it.

To answer the "is it like riding a bike" question - yes it is, but given the weight and speed, you have to somewhat more deliberate when steering - and you need to counter-steer a bit more as well as shifting your weigh - although it still pretty instinctive. Any cyclist can basically get on a motorcycle and ride round quite happily - need to learn to ride it safely and / or pass a test, but basic riding along is the same.

Whether the get on the back with someone - worth asking yourself "is rider a nutter?" and even if not a nutter, will they show off or try and impress you.

I shall not be riding myself... just a passenger (possibly) and no not a nutter and will not be showing off or impressing me and a competant rider too as they have had and ridden one for a good 25 years plus...

I ride one. Don't want to put you off, but even the most competent rider can have an accident. I have lost a few friends over the years, and one of them was a highly trained Police motorcyclist who was out on his own bike one day and made an error of judgement for which he paid the ultimate price. Having said that, accidents like that can happen in a car, or even when riding a bicycle!
If you decide to accept the offer of a pillion ride, just do as nature will dictate - which is as @Profpointy has stated and don't try to stay bolt upright.

I have owned and ridden motorbikes from being in my teens (not currently though) I have taken passengers on my motorbikes who have been terrified until they have taken a steady ride on the back of my motorcycle, the best advice I can give you is relax and wrap your arms around the waist of the driver of the bike as that way you have to move as (s)he moves, I am sure once you have been for a ride you will want more. Motorbike riding imo is exhilarating.

Is your potential driver male? (Just thinking of your remarks on Brandane's thread where he offered his spanners...)
If so, why turn down the opportunity to clutch a leather-clad..... (sorry, must go for a cold shower... :heat:)

He is male... there is no leather apparently... (I did ask for a preview) its some new fabric the name of which escapes me .

I may *ahem* or may not already have clutched so its a moot point :shy:

Having returned to motorcycles after nearly 30 years gap, I found my leathers had, (cough), "shrunk" in the cupboard.
I must confess, the resulting "Tom-of-Finland" look didn't really do me any favours

Cordura is likely to be the material. It is extremely good, very abrasion resistant. And more than suitable for use on the road. In fact, more breathable than leather, and waterproof are good plus points. So no need to worry about that.

Try to look at the road ahead still if you can so you can see when he will need to be using the brakes. There's nothing more annoying as a rider than being head butted in the back/helmet every time you use the brake.

If I am very short and he is not how will I see?
