There were some characters. Mrs Gti works for a nursery equipment company and she says the most ostentatious frilly stuff sells like hot cakes to the travellers, especially in Liverpool.
Must admit I was a bit amazed at the Confirmation outfits though; I though Confirmation was supposed to be about starting a life of modesty and charity.

I think they're demure and understated

HOWEVER: also consider in the first series (I think) there was an interview with a dressmaker in Liverpool who made some of the outfits (both the wedding dresses and the reception 'bits of material') and she said summat like "some folk think they look like prostitutes (reception garb) but you'd be hard pushed to find a culture that sets higher moral standards for its young".
