If you were to build your own bike what parts would you use?.... i know this is all depends on your needs so for the purpose of this i will limit your options:

You are looking to build an all round bike, fast, comfortable, cyclocross type so one bike fits all year round, no riding on 2mm wide tyres as has to be able to take the odd bit of roughish road

Consider Frame, Forks, Groupset, Wheels & Tyres.... things like seat post & cables & bars i wouldn't worry about so much, just the main parts.

To make it more challenging lets say it has to be as good or better than something mainstream like...... Giant TXC & lets be realistic so keep total cost down to something most can consider.... say.... £1000. Hang on! before you say only £1000, you can use second-hand parts to make it achievable

Now that should get you thinking.... dream bike on a budget made your way

It will be interesting to see which parts from which manufacturers people really like

Frame:Kinesis Crosslight
Fork: ^the match of above
Groupset: 105 at minimum, but would have to be the hydraulic version Chainrings, I ride both a compact and a standard double so either
Bars: I've had FSA Wing Compact bars on bikes for a few years and really like them. Huge flat tops which are comfy for big hands like mine
Stem: Used FSA or Deda in the past
Wheels: Kinesis Crosslight CX

All parts secondhand of course

Have to say, i have no experience with Kinesis.... but being used prices i would change for the Ultegra if the budget allowed it

Handmade frame in 853 or Ti- if I'm going to the effort of building one from scratch I'm not going to use an off the peg job. Mix of Ultegra and XT gruppos, whatever finishing kit and wheels looks shiny in the catalogue.

My surly build was a bit over your target price, but I got a bit spendy with the lights, guards, brakes and the wheels would have been cheaper off the peg.

I'm thinking for the frame, Specialized S Works.... budget would be very tight but it is doable....

So:

Specialised S Works frame & forks or if not then Specialized Roubaix
Ultegra groupset
Wheels..... hmmmm..... not sure, would need to be both strong & lights.... possibly the Mavic Cosmic but im sure i'd find better, just depends on whats left on the budget.

I'm in the process of doing this. Waiting for my hand built 853 Pro team Mercian Strada Speciale frame. I have hand built (by DCR) wheels (H Plus Son rims, Royce Hubs) Ultegra groupo, Ritchey classic stem, bars, seatpost, Brooks saddle & bar tape.

this is not about buying new or being restricted in your choice, its about building your dream bike on a budget

Shifters and Mechs - Shimano 105, Triple
Headset, BB - Hope
Hubs - Hope, Rims - H Plus Son Archetype - handbuilt
Tyres - Schwalbe Durano Plus - 25mm
Brakes - TRP Hy-Rd
Bars, Stem, Seat-post - Ritchey Classic
Saddle - Charge Scoop

Rides very well, and Hope hubs remove the need for a bell.

The S Works frame alone would bust the budget, never lone the mavics and ultegra

Think your in dream world
