Bike Colours..

Yesterday in another thread, HLab stated that 'a black bike will be easier to clean'.


In my general hignorance, I do not understand how colour can affect easiness, or otherwise, in cleaning a bike, can someone explain please? Or is it just that black hides dirt much better?!!

Yip, you've answered your own question black just makes it easier to hide and white highlights the dirt ;-) To get a white bike to look as acceptable as a black bike you have to do a lot more cleaning and hence it is harder to clean ;-)

I've got a black bike, a blue bike and a white (winter) bike, and they all look filthy when they're dirty.

have had a white bike , a pale blue bike , 2 blacks and now a red.


black shows any dirt, white hides it better till the dirt is smudged, the pale blue was great at hiding it until smudged and the red seemed the best.

it only ever has a weeks worth of dirt at most anyway

My black bike hides the dirt well enough that I can ride it without feeling guilty for not keeping it clean.

Now if I could only find a dark brown bike...

silver bikes are great for not showing the dirt, but who wants a silver bike. almost as bad as silver cars

My white bike goes out every day, hence why it's grey most of the time!!!

In my present condition no problem, bad knee , overweight , not in approx 2 weeks, so really looking forward to the ToEL this weekend, i wonder if Redstone Rigg has chairlifts

subaqua: as I suspected; its best not to ever let them get too dirty by regular cleaning! And is possibly contrary to Hlab's theory - if a black bike remains unwashed with hidden dirt, it will take an absolute age to get rid of all the encrusted muck when it does finally get a wash, thereby taking longer than a lighter clooured bike!!!

silver - strange that; I hardly ever see silver bikes. Like cars, it must be a fashion thing.

Most titanium frames are left unpainted and therefore a sort of 'silver' colour. Not sure that makes them easier to clean though!

There's not a lot in what colour is the easiest to clean. I had two Ford Escorts, one black the other white. On the black one all soil related dirt would dry a light colour and show up, where as oily deposits would hardly show up, on the white car, the soil related dirt did not show up much when it dried, where as oil deposits always looked like big dark smudges.

But I give my bikes a good clean after every ride apart for my old commuter so I do not worry about having a dirty bike.

They're all the same. They all require the same amount of cleaning to get properly clean (providing the same amount of dirt is on each bike).
