There a LeisureLakesBike store in Nottingham, I know/knew one of the sales assistants there. Pop down and have a look.

I would imagine they should have some selection of bikes that would suit his requirements, and if not should be able to get them in to test ride.

I'll ask him about that - we were going to have a look at the shops tomorrow lunchtime - work is west of Derby not in Nottingham but that store might not be too far away.

Thinking about it more, I think a 'commuter' type hybrid with a fairly upright riding position and capability of taking racks and mudguards might be more appropriate buy than a more hardcore touring bike. The one I linked to above might be a bit too cheapo, so any recommendations or thoughts on this type are welcome.

Dawes Karakum; comes with a rack for luggage, and butterfly bars to help with the back pain.

About £650
I would recommend the Dawes KaraKum, as I have one.
As I do sometimes suffer from lower backpain, the butterfly bars are a godsend.
The bike cost £749 got lights helmet cyclecomputer the total cost about £850 and got it on the cycle to work scheme.
