Wife is reasonably positive about taking up cycling. Nothing serious, just for exercise, day trips - maybe the odd weekend away. For a bike I am thinking some sort of Hybrid like a Carrera Subway from Halfords - light enough not to be a pain but strong / comfortable enough for forrest / canal paths and maybe some XC trails. No forks.

Can't see it being worth spending more than £500. Before going out and buying any one else been in this position and can impart advice?

Depending on the bike it would seem like a fair swap ;)

Have a look for something secondhand .. there are some bargains out there if you look around the other forums and places like Gumtree

I picked up my Cannondale on the Bike Radar forum for £300 and it had done less than 50 miles on the road, when new with the upgraded brakes this bike cost £1000

We are about to Ebay my wife's Specialized Mika in a small size. It's three years old, has only done about 40 miles and with some slick tyres it would make a comfy tourer. Haven't thought about price yet but I guess we'll be looking for around £300.

This thread came up as banned here in Renfrewshire where we do not trade wives for bikes. We tend to keep onto all our females here due to the competition from Glasgow (which hoovers up our females), a couple of hundreds of chippies away.

Speaking off........ I have seen a lot of bikes in the pawnshops and second hand shops (Pound converters + their new competitors) though. We are talking knock off prices and well worth checking out. Is Dale's Cycles still around ? Well worth checking out too. That SportsDirect too is worth checking out.

In old days; when men advertised for cars for their wives, the requirements to brakes and safety was the last thing on their mind, if on their mind at all. Due to the alarming changes in the life insurance policies, I would also check out the brakes of the bike this time around. Just a good advice we have picked up here in Renfrewshire. Females no longer grows on trees. Not here, anyway.

I'm in the process of using my Cycle2Work scheme to help get one of these: Specialized Globe Daily 2 Step Thru' http://www.edinburghbicycle.com/products/specialized-globe-daily-2-step-through-12?bct=categories/bicycles/womens-bikes for £500 which will be shared between SWMBO and me

Why? Well, it looks pretty and she doesn't like the complication of a lot of gears. This has 7 so it's easier for her

Only I got this older, well used model...been around the block a few times, sometimes requires a bit of coaxing to get it in first and is built more for comfort than agility. Opens to offers.

I bought the wife a lovely Specialized and she has ridden it twice in the last 3 years; so based on my experience buy whatever as she wont ride it anyway!

Just bought a Scott Sub 40 for Mrs O in the Evans sale. Well actually they then told me they'd ran out of the 2011 model so let me have a 2012 for the same one third off anyway. :bravo:
