bike gears in brakes?

I returned to cycling a few months ago to find that road bikes have gears in their brakes? seems very wacky to me, when did this happen?

Welcome to the 21st century I even heard they now make bikes out of tubing that is not steel - have you ever heard anything like it.

disc brake connected to crank arms which is mounted around the BB. This obviously only works on a fixie.

Gear levers in their brake levers. A small but crucial difference.
It'll never catch on.

Just make sure you know how to change back down the gears before you test ride, otherwise you end up stuck in the biggest gear

I saw this image when I was researching fixed gear bikes for a conversion I was doing, and I've wondered about it ever since. It must be functional with the hydraulic hose being plumbed in. It's clearly been a money no object let's see what we can do sort of project. Needs a half link chain to complete the look though.

We've had gears and hubs together since at least 1918.
