I very nearly became a statistic this evening.

BUT, due to my hitherto hidden bike handling capabilities I saved the day, and myself.

I have to say I never knew I could pull a sideways slide, in the style of a speedway rider. However I did, and I even managed to stay upright (didn't even unclip) and at the next set of lights EVEN had a calm and collected word with the driver who made it necessary.

I put it down to the innate OFDOSQ* mechanism that we all have.

please tell me you have a helmet cam - this sounds hysterical

It must have been the night for it; I almost became a statistic too :-( Blond Bimbo decided she couldn't wait behind a cyclist going 25mph in a village. I guess she wasn't very bright at school and doesn't realise that when you get bonnet length past somebody on a blind bend they don't magically disappear. Thank goodness a) it was dry and b) I was on a bike with good brakes, and it handles well.

The people who go to Evening classes at the school opposite our estate all drive in to the schoolyard though they've probably driven less than a mile to get there... there's usually a tailback of cars turning in so I'm prepared for their numptiness, imagine my delight when approaching the junction while moving out towards the centre of the road at least 4 cars chose to accelerate noisily to overtake me on the other side of the road well within 100 yards of the entrance, all indicating left as they passed to get to the turn-in before I reached it- they were probably all rushing not to be late. With the entrance blocked they had to each do a progressively late emergency stop while I moved out to overtake the line of them to avoid being trapped on the inside with nowhere to go. They then all stared resolutely forward with their gormless unaware stares.... unbelievable.

[Edit: spelling!]

I went out with my eldest to go for a ride with some friends yesterday - lovely day out. Shame about the 2 drivers who, when we were heading back to the station to catch the train back home, thought it was a good idea to overtake us (the boy in front, me behind him and riding right out in primary) on a level crossing and then turn left into the road all over 2 or 3 metres past the crossing.

The first one doing it was scary. The second one, I really thought I was going to see my 9 year old get run over. How he didn't, or end up coming off avoiding it whilst crossing the tracks, I don't know. Horrible experience, and I'm just glad that the spidey senses were tingling enough to avoid it.

I find that the best solution is to aim for the bonnet, or an equally soft part of the car (or rear of a bus, where there's nice and soft, bendable steel to cushion you). My brakes work properly so I haven't had to pull a sudden stop like that in a while*.

*Luckily I learned today that I can go from 23 to 0 in roughly 6 lengths, after some smeghead in a bin lorry decided to turn across in front of me with no indicators or mirror checks.
