I spent quite a time planning a route, and then realised I needed to download something to 'read' the route on my PC. What should I use?

I am not using a GPS. I would just like to zoom in and print sections of my route.

I do a screen copy (Alt + Print Screen), then copy it into Word, trim it as required or enlarge, and then add any other parts of the route. I've got a whole series of Word documents covering different rides which I can then print out if I'm doing one again.

they used to let you save, but now don't. I save it as a GPX file then open that with mapmyrun.com - I could just use that to plan the route but their adds annoy me

Ah! Maybe you can! And I guess you can print too. I have had lots of work this weekend (in between looking at biking gear, this site and routing sites!), and my head is jelly. I will do that.

Which route have you chosen?

I think I am going to do the one you sent me, but with a slight detour up to Robin Hoods Bay. Probably camp near Malton on day one; up to Robin Hoods Bay on day two; then somewhere half way to home on the third day. I can't wait!

Sarah has loan of a hybrid for now, so reckon the wolds is better than the dales. Of course Rosedale Chimney would have been a cinch for me ;)!

I got the Banshee tent in the end, I reckon it will do the job. Got some bargain sleeping bags, that are not the lightest, but not too bad (well far too heavy for the serious tourist, but needs must! We are not taking much else, so me and the missus will be able to carry them between us no worries. And I need to be warm!

Long johns and t-shirts in bed is the way forward.
Top tip when it's cold is a hat, because you lose a lot of heat through your head. Things To Do With A Buff #7. If it's really cold, gloves are good too.

Another suggestion is a sleeping bag liner - silk is the best but quite expensive, pertex is cheap and nearly as good. They add a season rating with very little extra weight.
