I was just wondering what insurance is best to get.

I don't have home insurance - as at the moment I am housesitting for a friend, and don't really have a permanent base, but as I've just got a new bike, I thought it might be worth getting some insurance in case it gets stolen!

Any advice?

Also I was wondering what the deal is with the serial code you get when you buy a new bike - it is registered on a national database?

Many thanks!

Stand alone insurance policies cost around 10% (as a very rough guide) of the value of the bike and generally have some fairly strict requirements about lock types and what to lock it to. There's a few recommendations on here.

The serial numbers are not kept anywhere, often, the retailer doesn't even retain them. Make a note of your own and don't rely on others. That said, there are various national databases (such as Immobilise or The NMPR) and several police forces do bike coding events, like this one in Gloucester a few years back and I think the Met do them most weekends. I'm not sure about Sussex.
