I found an old pair of roof bars for two bikes in my loft during a clean out and they're yours for free if you can collect them - Tyne and Wear.
It was fitted to an old 'R' reg mini BL type (not BMW) with roof gutters, it clamps to the gutters.
It's meant for a road/touring bike rather than a mountain bike as the rear wheel holder is quite narrow. The front wheels have to come out and the forks are clamped in with old style screw up fly nuts.
