My wife has not been very accommodating with regards to having a bike in the kitchen or hall.

I'm looking for a not too expensive solution that is 6 wide and 3 deep with the height enough for a bike.

Please tell me I'm not looking at a £400 outlay!!

Depends how secure you want it to be. I have a 4 bike Asgard..was more than £400. See what their single bike options run, although you may want bigger for the anticipated N+1...edit they start around £400, voucher code this weekend for 10pc off

Also check your insurance company Ts & Cs

Posh restaurants always have bikes on the wall.
Well, not always.

I was going to suggest, is there somewhere else in the house it could be wall mounted? I'm planning to mount mines on the wall at the top of our staircase.

Should have got a Brompton.

Is a Brompton ok for long distances?
Yes, if you like them. There were 1/2 dozen on the last FNRttC (106km), I've seen several doing 400 & 600km audaxes, and there are quite a few doing PBP, 1200km in 96 hours or less.

I think they look a bit daft, but then so does the bike in my kitchen!!

Are they not a bit heavy? If 4 cyclists of equal fitness headed off on a road on a road bike, a hybrid, an MTB and a Brompton, would the difference between them be massive?

 Not opening that tin of worms. Take your question over to https://www.cyclechat.net/forums/folding-bikes.51/ and you will get some interesting answers.

(My only bike for 4 years was a folder, and I happily did the Dunwich Dynamo - 110 miles - on it. Not fast, but I'm not fast on a road bike either  )

You can get cheaper places to keep your bikes but it depends on what level of security you want , i spent about the same on a "security " shed then ended up spending more double skinning it along with ground anchors etc.

I have a brick outhouse thing that could be emptied, fix the door and made a bit drier.

Or I've spent the last half hour looking at Bromptons!!!
