I wonder if it would be possible to have lower cycle lights at junctions which give cyclists a green light before the general traffic, if a cycle is recognised to be in the ASL. It may also dissuade other road users encroaching on the ASL if they think that they will trigger the cycle phase and consequently have to wait longer at the lights.
BTW - as mentioned about Cable Street, there are cycle lights which people jump, but I think this at least partly due to the lights taking forever to give green to cyclists. I have sat at them for several changes of car lights, gave up and jumped them. Not sure if they don't register a cycle all the time, or the phasing is really this bad, but either case hardly makes me feel I am in a cycle friendly city.
