I quite like physics!

Pretty sure it's to do with centre of gravity and fulcrum points. in the same way lifting a sledgehammer from the "heavy" end will feel lighter than trying to lift it from the "sticky" end!

We might be mistaking weight for torsional force as well, now I think about the example I just gave.

I tried it and I wasn't sure. I reckon it may be because lifiting it using the latter method the bike is a bit more unwieldy so more difficult to handle and thus feels heavier. Perhaps.

Or perhaps it's not a real illusion. Perhaps it's an illusory illusion.

All i know is that if you lift it from the same place as you do every morning to carry it down the 10 steps from your house but you forget that you have loaded the rear panniers with 30 exercise books, you end up with a mahoosive bruise on the back of your calf.
Bloody fulcrums!
