What is the bike? If it's a racing bike then, yes it's very heavy. If something like a tourer with mudguards & rack it's not too bad.

My knockabout bike, on which I've recently ridden the Hardknott and Wrynose passes is 18kg unladen, so I'd be quite content with something that weighs around 15kg

I must be a total weight weenie as I find 15kg incredibly heavy, and 18 kg inconceivable. In my world a light bike is 6kg and a heavy one 10kg. OK add 2 kgs for a MTB. What's a hybrid?

Forgot to ask: Is it a steel frame or ally?
i should think its a steel frame, as i only paid 189 pounds for it from Decathlon, looking at something like a Giant Escape 3 if i can get finance for it i think that weighs in at about 11 k

i wouldn't worry too much about the weight, as long as you're not heaving to pick it up, it'll be fine. When i first bought my current bike a decade ago, I thought 'blimey that's light!', although it's certainly not 'the lightest' being a steel MTB... it was a lot lighter than my previous bike. As long as i can carry it up and down a flight of stairs comfortably (which i do daily)... then that's fine by me.
