Oh heckety heck. Now Im more confused than ever. The Hybrid I want would be a road bike with flat bars like the sirrus (and i do like specialized bikes) although I think its just out of my price range once I add pannier rack and mudguards.

So the general consensus is that a "Road bike flat bar" hybrid will be better for my commute than my Hardtail MTB but there are better models out there than a Meteor ?

What's wrong with drop bars? I think they are much better for road commuting. Get a headwind, and you can go down on the drops to minimise your loss in speed. Drops have more hand positions than flat bars, and they are narrower if you filter in traffic.

Friday, why do you particularly want a hybrid? Not that there'#s anything wrong with a hybrid, I commute on one, but don't close your mind to road bikes either.

How queer. I didn't see BM's post at all there. Sorry for the echo, Mikey!

LOL, no worries! It's all good, another vote of experience. I just wanted to add that I also started with a hybrid, and moved to a road bike. I don't regret having the hybrid, but I might have saved myself some money if I'd listened to instinct and others in the beginning and just got the road bike first.

LOL to the buffoon bit! you didnt sound like one don't worry! - i just posted my 1st post too.... i ride my MTB to work... and i want to make it more of a super slick road bike... so im trying to put some slick tyres on it.... having trouble finding any in my rim size though!! hufffff ..... you could just get another set of wheels with slicks for commuting?... im considering it now.......

Ok then Im all ears folks. Can anyone recommend a sub £350 road bike ? I'll want to a stick a pannier rack and muds on it.

How are road bikes for the odd bit of bumping up on kerbs etc ?

I have concerns about road holding in the wet, do need to I invest in some "winter tyres" ?

Get a touring bike.

This one's £450, so a bit over your budget:

Otherwise check ebay, classifieds etc

Merida have been getting great write ups and high scores in reviews for "cheap" bikes (check out Bike Radar reviews section and current 220 Tri Magazine). Find a local stockist and see if they can do an end of season deal.
