I really feel sorry for anybody who lives in Birmingham! Coming home from Devon last night, we left Bideford at 4.15pm, hoping for an easy journey back. Apart from a slight delay in Bristol, everything was fine until we hit Birmingham!! The M6 was closed from junction 10 to 11 and the tail back was tremendous. We covered 3 miles in 1h45!! Then we had take a diversion that was badly signposted. I was absolutely fuming in the car.:cursing:. A journey that should have taken 6 hours took us 9 hours so we arrived home at 1am.:evil:As I was overtired by then, it took me ages to go to sleep and I am still tired today.
Birmingham, you are sh****hole!! I am not blaming the people there but just its road structure. Rant over.
I feel more sorry for the person who died in the crash that caused the tailbacks and their family to be honest.

....
The canal network is great, too.

I did the canals through to the bullring back in the early 80's.. It was a few days before the Handsworth riots just to add a bit of spice to an extremely uncomfortable experience. The fact we navigated in and out through a sea of supermarket trolleys, general urban decay and people lobbing stuff at us from bridges was an achievement in itself.

I bet its all Rosie and Jim now.

Partly right. Haven't found Rosie yet.

I was born and bred in Birmingham.
I couldn't wait to leave; moved out of the city in 1978 and moved around North Worcestershire a bit for 25 years.
I now live in North Devon.
Every time I have to go back to Birmingham, which thankfully is rare these days, it depresses the hell out of me.
Wouldn't bother me if I never went there again. Mind you, I think much the same of any large city.

And then there's the balti...[/QUOTE]
Ah yes.... the Balti.
I still have fond memories of a bout of food poisoning shortly after a visit to Adil's Balti house on the Ladypool Road.xx(

You, my friend, badly need to feast your eyes on this little classic from the 70s. (Once seen, never forgotten):

I think Cliff Richard on a hovercraft around the Birmingham canal network for his 1973 film take me High was a pinnacle moment - shame there used to be a vid on Youtoob but it's no longer available, however google turns up a lot of info - http://tinyurl.com/jz8pjzx

Sod Greece, I'm on my way.
Better yet, digest a Danish at a Viennese cafe. Telly not tuned in to the complexities of the Single Market? And why didn't he try a Savaloy?
